GSC needs your vote to fund a new social inclusion project

To help secure funding from the Aviva Community Fund 2017, Guildford’s award-wining professional theatre company are asking for your vote to ensure delivery of their social inclusion project Spirit of Youth, which brings together care home residents and disadvantaged children to transform their well-being.

If successful, the funding of up to £5,000 will provide a unique opportunity for its participants to form new bonds and relationships, while reducing loneliness, depression and despair amongst the elderly. Only projects with the most votes will become finalists, so additional support is vital.

Spirit of Youth will bring together care home residents and children from a local disadvantaged school to create their own version of a Shakespeare play, which will be performed to family, friends and the wider community within the care home. As the participants work towards a common-goal, they will naturally share their own experiences and stories, granting opportunities for the young to inspire the elderly whilst having their own learning supported. Assisted by our professional facilitators, both age groups will gain pride in the performing of the final show.

Established in 2006, Guildford Shakespeare Company has grown into one of Surrey’s best-loved and largest producing theatre companies. Last year, GSC’s Education Department engaged with over 4000 people, young and old, across Surrey and the South East. They are dedicated to working with all sections of society and run several outreach programmes with some of the most disadvantaged schools in Surrey.

“We have seen first-hand how our participants are empowered to grow in confidence and learn new skills” explains Ant Stones, GSC’s Head of Education. “Over 60 per cent of residents in care homes never receive visitors, which has a damaging impact on impact on their emotional and physical well-being, even life expectancy. Children are open-minded and have an infectious energy, which will allow allowing both generations to challenge and enjoy themselves in a risk-free environment.”
