Explore fifteenth century Flemish art, rich in religious symbolism and domestic detail. Oil painting facilitated a revolutionary realism, comparable to developments in early Renaissance Italy, but with significant differences, which we shall examine. One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' tells the story surrounding Theseus and Hippolita’s nuptials. Disturbing fairies, power struggles and jealousy with a bit of slapstick thrown in. Three parallel plots are brought together. We will read the play together in a supportive atmosphere, as Shakespeare was written to be heard. This will open up opportunities for discussion and sharing ideas. The Great War radically changed the world; both society generally and the public perception of the globe were altered. The role art played within this upheaval is complex. Neither outright propaganda, nor criticism, make for the best art. The strongest statements are more nuanced and grow out of individual experience and vision. We will look at this range of responses, as well as how the war influenced art and how art influenced views of the war.
