Winding up of Surrey Festival Choir
July 2 - July 31
With great regret the Trustees of the Surrey Festival Choir announced the winding-up of the choir at a Special General Meeting held on 27th June 2019 in the Church Hall of St. Nicolas Church, Bury St, Guildford GU2 4AW.
The decision was reluctantly taken by the Trustees of the choir for the following principal factors:
- the enforced cancellation of a concert planned for the summer of 2018 due to an insufficient number of singers;
- the results of a questionnaire sent to singers early in 2019, confirming a declining lack of continuing support for the choir;
- the low level of financial reserves resulting from these two factors among others.
In the opinion of the Trustees the performance of a summer concert in 2019 ran the real risk of reducing the financial reserves to a level that could risk members of the choir incurring significant personal liability for the debts of the choir from the substantial loss that could be incurred. The constitution of the choir gives the Trustees authority to proceed to the winding-up of the choir under these conditions and advice on how to wind up the choir was gained from the Charity Commission before this decision was taken..
The closing level of financial reserves of the choir have yet to be finalised but the remaining amount, after payment of outstanding invoices, will be donated to the New Surrey Performing Arts Library, the private charity which is taking over the activities of the former Surrey Performing Arts Library from Surrey County Council. This library holds a large collection of musical scores and drama scripts which are available for hire by music and drama societies both in Surrey and elsewhere via interlibrary loans. Thus our reserves will be used for the benefit of an organisation with aims similar to those of Surrey Festival Choir, as required by the choir’s constitution..
Further administrative steps and formal communication of this outcome for the choir to the Charity Commission will be undertaken to complete the winding-up process.
The Trustees are very sad that the choir has come to an end in this fashion and would like to acknowledge publicly the support given to them by the faithful singers who have supported our annual summer concerts over many years.
