Great Minds by Anne-Katrin Purkiss
January 11 @ 10:00 - March 29 @ 17:00£7.50
This exhibition displays a selection of portrait photographs of leading artists, writers and scientists from the archive of Anne-Katrin Purkiss. It is dedicated to women working in creative professions, defined broadly to encompass scientific as well as artistic production.
The images are brought together in order to challenge our unconscious bias of a successful scientist or artist as a male figure. These portraits are a tribute to women of different generations and backgrounds who share an exceptional creative ability and who have thus become an inspiration to others—both women and men.
Two considerations shaped the idea of an exhibition featuring portraits of women alongside their work: in a wider context, the hundredth anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom; and more specifically, the photographer’s conversations with women artists and scientists in the course of commissioned work or her own photographic projects.
The display is composed of two parts, with the main space dedicated to scientists, architects, designers, writers and performing artists. The second part, at the rear, is laid out to include elements of a studio environment. It shows not only portraits of visual artists but also examples of their work, and a photo-installation with portraits of visitors which will be completed during the course of the exhibition.
