The Laramie Project (Act One)
February 13 - February 15
In October 1998, the murder of Matthew Shepard shocked the small community of Laramie, Wyoming and its effects ricocheted out across the whole of America. Assaulted because he was gay, Matthew was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead.
A deeply moving theatrical experience, The Laramie Project, was created from over 200 interviews conducted in the immediate aftermath of Matthew’s brutal murder and brings to life the varying thoughts, feelings and philosophies of a community forced to confront its way of life; its culture, its ideologies, and its idiosyncrasies.
Act I return to the Mill Studio to tell the story of this small town struggling to reconcile itself to such an act of hate. Through the words and actions of over 60 people, The Laramie Project shows us the very depths of human nature, from extreme hate to unwavering compassion.
