The Laramie Project (Act One)

February 13 - February 15

And someone got up there and said…c’mon guys, let’s show the world that Laramie is not this kind of town.  But it is that kind of town…that’s a lie.  Because it happened here. And we have to mourn this and we have to be sad…I mean, these are people trying to distance themselves from this crime.  And we need to own this crime.  Everyone needs to own it.  We are like this.  We ARE like this. WE are LIKE this.’

In October 1998, the murder of Matthew Shepard shocked the small community of Laramie, Wyoming and its effects ricocheted out across the whole of America. Assaulted because he was gay, Matthew was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead.

A deeply moving theatrical experience, The Laramie Project, was created from over 200 interviews conducted in the immediate aftermath of Matthew’s brutal murder and brings to life the varying thoughts, feelings and philosophies of a community forced to confront its way of life; its culture, its ideologies, and its idiosyncrasies.

Act I return to the Mill Studio to tell the story of this small town struggling to reconcile itself to such an act of hate. Through the words and actions of over 60 people, The Laramie Project shows us the very depths of human nature, from extreme hate to unwavering compassion.

Suitable for ages 14+, this production contains mature themes and language.

Presented by the Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre, Act 1 group
Written by Moisés Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project
