Were Renaissance portraits commissioned to show other people what the patron looked like, or for status? To establish the patron’s sense of self, when mirrors weren’t widely available? Or commissioned to take pleasure in the fine art of portrayal? Were they idealised? Can we ever be sure of a realistic portrait? This course will run at the same time as the Lorenzo Lotto Portraits exhibition at the National Gallery, from 05 November 2018 – 10 February 2019.
