Peter Shaffer’s ‘The Royal Hunt of the Sun’
November 6 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm£12.90
Peter Shaffer explored farce and epic tragedy in his writing. One of the foremost dramatists of our time, he repeatedly wrestled with his ordered puritanical side and his anarchic tendencies. His plays reflect these two elements of his personality. We will look at some of his texts and read extracts from The Royal Hunt of the Sun, which stunned audiences in its first performances. Shaffer wished he could be more like some of his characters and ‘live in the moment and not worry about the consequences’, envying a capacity for freedom and seeking his freedom in writing.
