The 2019/20 Guildford International Concert Season opens with one of Russia’s greatest orchestras, accompanied by the iconic British pianist, Peter Donohoe.
Under the baton of acclaimed Conductor, Yuri Botnari the concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Marche Slave; an unabashed flag-waver preceding Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2. A piece often described as the greatest piano concerto ever written.
After the interval, excerpts from two thrilling ballet suites, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake which began life as a modest family entertainment, yet with its masterful characterisation and glorious melodies ensured that it translates perfectly to the concert hall. Followed by Aram Khachaturian’s 1942 ballet, Gayaneh; an upbeat depiction of an Armenian collective farm on the right die of the Soviet authorities, and including seven of the ballet’s most vibrant numbers, not least the flashing Sabre Dance.
