Grayshott Folk Club presents: DAMIEN O’KANE & BAND + Matthews & Vincent
November 2 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm£16.00
Damien O’Kane is a top Folk singer/song writer/guitarist and Banjo player from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, who has taken some of the greatest songs from the Folk canon-“The Blacksmith”, “The Banks of The Bann”, “I am a Youth” and “The Green Fields of America” among them and re-invented them in refreshingly original ways.
Damien studied for a newly created Traditional Music degree at Newcastle University, then recorded his first album in 2003 with Shona Kipling. As a member of Flook, he won a Best Group Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2006.
Damien has continued to push the boundaries of Folk music both on his own and with a variety of other musicians (most recently Ron Block). He joined Kate Rusby’s band and is currently touring the UK and Ireland with her. They got on so well that they teamed up and got married in 2010. They now have two beautiful daughters together.
Damien has recently launched #FolkProstateCancer
Since Kate’s father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2012 (now recovered), Damien was compelled to do something to raise both awareness and money for the cause. It’s a long time coming but this event is, in O’Kane’s own words, “hopefully the first of many where we can raise awareness of this disease, through the power of music, in this case, folk music. Raising awareness of any cancer brings all cancers to the fore. Music brings people together, this creates discussion and further encourages people to think more about particular issues. For the event, I’ve invited some of the best folk musicians and singers on the folk and acoustic scene right now” Not just one event but an Afternoon Concert and an Evening Concert, both on sale now directly from Penistone Paramount website (see links below).

Damien’s own albums include:
